About
Menial, according to dictionary.com:
1. Of or relating to work or a job regarded as servile.
2. Of, relating to, or appropriate for a servant.
Hence, a menial tool is a simple tool to solve a simple(and/or lowly) problem.
It's not like it is a very difficult problem to solve, it's just that at the moment, nobody remembered, or felt like relearning, how it was done.
Enter www.menialtools.com, the site that does nothing really advanced(well, the GI and GL calculator is a quite neatly haxxored, in many ways), but still manages to be useful.
The site is also a demonstrator for the open source JSDC library - Sourceforge: Javascript Data Components)
Site FAQ
If you have any problem using the site, in any reasonably XHTML 1.0 compliant browser(like not
lynx!), please please please report to
webmaster@menialtools.com. First look at the FAQ below, though..
- Q: Using IE 7 beta 2, the GI and GL calculator acts a little bit strange when switching between tree-search and free-text search, sometimes only returning exactly the same number of, or less, results as the earlier tree-based query did.
A: I struggled for some time trying to solve this problem and the only thing i have found is that IE 7 beta 2 seems to have some bug in it's DOM implementation. It doesn't seems to refresh the DOM tree properly under certain conditions. It could of course still be some really obscure bug in JSDC but i have given up looking now since it works in all other browsers anyway.
- Q: The site looks strange in _insert_pet_browser_here_, why is that?
A: Currently, the site is only tested in Firefox, Opera, IE 6 and IE 7, since i currently don't have any other browsers available. I tried Konqueror under Gnome a bit, but had some problems using the XMLHTTPRequest object on the version i used back then.
Anyone using Netscape, Safari/Konqueror, OmniWeb, Camino, Mozilla etc. please contact webmaster@menialtools.com and tell whether it works or not.
- Q: If I have a browser that should work, according to above, and the site still looks like utter crap or doesn't work at all, what gives?
A: Well, there could be several reasons. Everything from restrictive javascript settings to low(or extremely high) resolution.. If all the other sites you normally go to looks great, and this doesn't, please contact webmaster@menialtools.com
